When circulation to the feet is reduced, even a small cut can turn into a stubborn ulcer that does not heal well, becomes painful, limits walking, and increases the risk of infection and tissue damage. HBOT is not a replacement for standard diabetic foot care. It can be used as an add-on to support healing in selected cases by improving oxygen delivery to under perfused tissue, helping the wound environment, and supporting repair processes like epithelial regeneration and new vessel formation. In a double-blind randomized controlled trial of ischaemic, non-healing diabetic lower extremity ulcers, complete healing occurred more often in the hyperbaric oxygen group than in the control group, suggesting HBOT can be a valuable adjunct when used alongside conventional treatment.
