Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa L. or Cimicifuga racemosa L.) belongs to the buttercup family. It is native to North American forests and is both an ornamental and medicinal perennial plant, growing over one meter tall. It features large, divided leaves with irregular serrations and tall, plume-like clusters of cream-white flowers on slender stalks.
The rhizomes and roots of black cohosh hold the most value. The rhizome is dark brown to black, thick, and knotted, with large buds on its upper surface. Covered in fibrous roots, they concentrate mainly at the lower part of the plant. In autumn, when the leaves begin to wither, the roots are harvested, cleaned, and usually dried or prepared as an infusion.
